URA Reports Bribery Case Involving Manager

Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has reported a bribery case involving a staff member serving as a Manager in External Operations Customs, who is alleged to have been part of a wider group that attempted to solicit a USD 60,000 bribe from a taxpayer.

The alleged scheme reportedly involved an ongoing tax audit. According to information available to the investigation, the suspects allegedly contacted the taxpayer through the assistance of a clearing agent and offered to help have the audit discontinued or otherwise influenced in exchange for money.

From USD 100,000 to USD 60,000

The suspects allegedly initially demanded USD 100,000 from the taxpayer. Following negotiations, the amount was reportedly reduced to USD 60,000.

The matter came to the attention of URA investigators after a whistleblower alerted the investigation team. Investigators subsequently began discreetly monitoring the suspected individuals without their knowledge.

The Sting Operation

As part of the investigation, a meeting was reportedly arranged at a restaurant in a Kampala suburb at around 7:30 p.m., where the agreed money was to be handed over.

According to the account of the operation, the exchange was successfully completed. However, immediately after the suspects allegedly received the USD 60,000, the investigation team moved in and arrested them.

More Suspects Being Pursued

The case is believed to involve a larger network, and investigations are continuing as authorities work to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have been involved.

The arrested suspects are expected to be taken to court, where the judicial process will determine the next course of action.

It is important to note that the allegations remain subject to due process, and the accused persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court.

URA Encourages Whistleblowing

The case highlights the role whistleblowers can play in helping authorities uncover suspected corruption and misconduct.

Members of the public who encounter suspected bribery, corruption or other misconduct are encouraged to report through the URA whistleblower line:
