General Motors (GM) has reached a tentative agreement with Canadian union Unifor to invest C$144 million in its Oshawa, Ontario plant to assemble the next-generation heavy-duty GMC Sierra pickup.
The agreement affects about 4,600 union members and includes a commitment not to immediately close or sell GM’s second assembly facility in Ingersoll.
The investment comes as Canada’s automobile industry faces uncertainty from tariffs and ongoing trade tensions with the United States.
The deal is being viewed as a positive development for Canadian manufacturing and employment, although workers still have to ratify the agreement.
