Pakwach, Uganda — Police have arrested about 10 young men in Mubogo, Pakwach District, over allegations that they were manufacturing and packaging counterfeit alcohol designed to resemble the popular Express liquor brand.
According to preliminary information, the suspects allegedly produced alcohol that closely mimicked the legitimate product in taste, packaging, bottle design and branding stickers.
Police say some of the suspects reportedly travelled from Kampala and had been living in Pakwach while allegedly operating the production site for the past two to three months.
More Than 1,000 Bottles Recovered
The arrests followed an investigation reportedly initiated by the legitimate owners of Express liquors after concerns emerged over suspected counterfeit products.
During the operation, authorities recovered more than 1,000 bottles of ready-made alcohol packaged in 250ml containers. The bottles were reportedly sealed and awaiting the attachment of branded stickers.
Police also seized:
- Counterfeit stickers
- Empty bottles
- Alcohol stocks
- Customized packaging boxes
- Other materials allegedly connected to the production operation
The suspects are currently being held at Pakwach Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Public Health Concerns
Counterfeit alcohol remains a serious public health concern because consumers may not know what substances or quantities are contained in illegally produced drinks.
The trade can also cause financial losses to legitimate manufacturers while denying the government revenue through taxes and licensing.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the suspects or disclosed where the allegedly counterfeit products may have been distributed.
Police are expected to provide further information as investigations progress.
