Hundreds Dead as Rescue Teams Search for Missing.
NEPAL — A devastating flash flood and landslide disaster along the Nepal-China border has killed hundreds of people and left thousands missing as rescue teams continue searching through mud and debris.
The disaster began on August 26, 2026, when a section of glacier and rock collapsed in the Himalayas. The collapse triggered a massive avalanche of ice, rock and debris that entered the Lhende River before sending a powerful surge downstream into Nepal.
Floods Swept Away Homes, Roads and Bridges
The resulting flood travelled through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, affecting communities in several districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.
Homes, roads and bridges were destroyed, while several hydropower facilities were badly damaged. The disaster has also left some communities difficult to reach, complicating rescue operations.
By Saturday, reports indicated that more than 600 people had died across Nepal and Tibet, while thousands remained missing, although casualty figures continue to change as rescue teams reach previously isolated areas.
Scientists Point to Glacier Collapse
The United States Geological Survey said the event was likely triggered by a glacial collapse near Langtang Lirung. The collapse generated seismic energy equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, initially leading to confusion about whether an earthquake had caused the disaster.
Scientists have also raised concerns about the increasing instability of high-mountain environments as glaciers and frozen ground respond to a warming climate.
Rescue Efforts Continue
Nepalese authorities, security forces and international partners are continuing search-and-rescue operations, while helicopters are being used to reach isolated communities and evacuate survivors.
Authorities are also monitoring newly formed lakes and other unstable areas because further flooding remains possible.
The disaster has highlighted the growing vulnerability of communities living downstream of Himalayan glaciers and the need for stronger early-warning systems and disaster preparedness.
As Nepal searches for survivors and mourns those lost, the scale of the destruction continues to emerge.
